Rep. Lawson Seeks Investigation into How Migrant Children Will Reconnect with Parents
WASHINGTON DC – Congressman Al Lawson (FL-05) joined Congressman Lou Correa (CA-46) in writing a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Nielsen asking for the department’s plan to return children to their parents. The letter, signed by 122 Democrats, demands answers to several questions, including:
- Is it DHS’ policy to reunite parents with their children before deportation?
- How quickly (average time) can DHS and/or HHS locate a child's parent?
- Can DHS/HHS locate a parent for each child currently in custody?
- What does DHS plan to do with the children that are not reconnected with their parents?
Rep. Lawson has been outspoken on the Trump Administration’s “zero-tolerance policy” and the ongoing trauma the children have experienced since they were separated from their parents.
“It is imperative that there be a plan in place to reunite the thousands of children separated from their parents,” Rep. Lawson said. “The practice of punishing parents who are trying to save their children’s lives by separating them is contrary to the fundamental values this country stands for.”
Rep. Lawson has co-sponsored the Keep Families Together Act, which promotes family unity by prohibiting Department of Homeland Security officials from cruelly separating children from their parents at our borders. He has also signed on to H.Res.927, condemning the Trump Administration's zero tolerance policy. Last week, the congressman reached out to the chair and ranking member of the Appropriations Committee, asking them to defund any effort of separating families.
