Rep. Lawson Helps to Secure $20M for JAXPORT Terminal Improvements
JACKSONVILLE, FL – U.S. Rep. Al Lawson (FL-05) helped to secure a $20 million federal grant that will transform more than 100 acres of existing terminal space at JAXPORT’s Blount Island Marine Terminal into a modern facility that will be able to handle 425,000 additional 20-foot-equivalent-units annually.
The funding is part of a $238 million plan to expand and upgrade the facility. In addition to repaving, the project will improve stormwater management, install new lighting, signage and other utilities.
“This grant is just another installment on our long-term plan to improve this vital community asset, and create more good paying local jobs,” said Rep. Lawson said. “This project is expected to create an additional 15,000 jobs, with an estimated $24 return for every $1 invested.”
JAXPORT is one of the “Top 15” container ports in the nation, and has a $26 billion economic impact on our community, supports 132,000 jobs, and is responsible for $727 million in state and local taxes. JAXPORT is a critical gateway to the global marketplace and is strategically positioned to accommodate the evolving needs of global shipping.
