Rep. Lawson Announces 2021 Congressional Art Competition for District Middle and High School Students
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Al Lawson (FL-05) is now accepting submissions for the 2021 Congressional Art Competition. This annual art contest, held by members of the U.S. House of Representatives, highlights the creative talents of students in each congressional district.
“I am looking forward to seeing the different pieces created by students across the district during this year’s art competition,” Rep. Lawson said. “Each year, we receive so many wonderful submissions, which truly showcase the promising talent of our students. During these difficult times, it is more important than ever for our young people to find creative outlets through the arts.”
The competition is open to students in grades 7-12. The winner will have his or her art placed along the halls of Congress and on the website. The artwork will remain on display in the U.S. Capitol for one year, where it may be viewed by millions of visitors. The winning piece will also be featured on the U.S. House’s Congressional Art Competition webpage. Jacksonville student Desiree Thompson-Huderson created last year’s winning art piece, “The Stray.”
Accepted artwork includes: paintings (including oil, acrylics and watercolor); drawings (including pastels, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, ink, and markers); collage (must be two dimensional); prints (including lithographs, silkscreen, and block prints); mixed media; computer generated art; photography.
Artwork and application materials are due to Rep. Lawson’s office by Wednesday, April 14. To enter, students must e-mail a high-resolution photograph of the submission and the completed Student Information and Release Form to Justin.Gilley@mail.house.gov. Winners will be announced in the spring.
