Tampa Bay Times: Ben Carson, Rubio in Jacksonville today
UPDATE: U.S. Rep. Al Lawson, D-Tallahassee, is also attending. The HUD news release made no mention of that; a spokesman told the Buzz that "we recently confirmed his participation."
HUD Secretary Ben Carson, along with Sen. Marco Rubio, this afternoon will tour a federally subsidized housing project in Jacksonville that has come under heavy criticism.
"Secretary Carson’s visit will allow him to hear directly from the people and organizations who rely on and support public housing," reads a release for the trip to Eureka Gardens.
Rubio made several trips to the property last year, along with Mayor Lenny Curry, and called for a federal investigation into owner Global Ministries Foundation.
“We welcome Secretary Carson to Eureka Gardens with great pride and hope," said Audrey Young, spokeswoman for GMF Preservation of Affordability Corp. "Dr. Carson shares our concern about generations of families living in federally-subsidized housing. Prior to purchasing the property in December 2012, GMF submitted a multi-year rehabilitation plan to HUD. HUD now prefers an expedited full rehab of Eureka Gardens so we are in the process of selling the property to The Millennia Companies which is prepared to begin an expedited full rehab when it purchases the property later this year. We are confident that Secretary Carson, HUD and The Millennia Companies will serve the residents of Eureka Gardens well in the years ahead.”
